Watch the video: Violent Brawl Unfolds in Nevada Court as Defendant Leaps at Judge
In a shocking incident at the Regional Justice Center in Las Vegas, a Nevada judge, Mary Kay Holthus, was assaulted by the defendant in a felony battery case, Deobra Delone Redden, 30.
The attack, captured on courtroom video, saw Redden leaping over a defense table and the judge’s bench, leading to a chaotic and bloody brawl involving court officials and attorneys. Judge Holthus suffered injuries but was not hospitalized, while a courtroom marshal who came to her aid was hospitalized for a bleeding gash on his forehead and a dislocated shoulder.
Redden, facing multiple felony charges, including battery on a protected person, was swiftly apprehended and jailed. The incident unfolded during Redden’s sentencing, where he pleaded for leniency, claiming to be someone constantly striving to do the right thing. As the judge indicated her intention to send him to prison, chaos erupted when Redden, not in custody at the time, charged forward, shouting expletives. The courtroom audience screamed in response.
Redden, a Las Vegas resident, had previously served prison time for domestic battery. Despite being found mentally competent to stand trial, he pleaded guilty in November to a reduced charge of attempted battery causing substantial bodily harm. Judge Holthus, with over 27 years of courthouse experience, was elected to the state court bench in 2018 and 2022. Court officials are now reviewing protocols to ensure the safety of the judiciary, the public, and employees.
